Why Fall is My Favorite Season/Semester to Teach Online

I had a few other blog posts lined up to use this month, but I didn’t want to miss my opportunity to write a holiday-themed post (my favorite!).

As online teachers know, sometimes the work we do at our computer year-round can get repetitive, but I like to break up the year by thinking about it seasonally. After all, we do have the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters.

Naturally, Fall is my very favorite semester to teach, and probably for obvious reasons.

  1. You can listen to Christmas music or watch/listen to Christmas movies while you work (which makes everything so much more enjoyable!)
  2. You can light a pumpkin spice candle next to your computer.
  3. When you take a short break, you can go for a quick walk outside in cooler weather.
  4. It just feels right to bundle up and drink coffee while grading papers.
  5. Your students get into it! Mine tend to give speeches about Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas topics during this time of year, which I couldn’t love more.
  6. It’s nice to see a glimpse of everyone’s home holiday decorations when I watch their speech recordings (that might sound weird, but it’s true!).
  7. Students and supervisors all seem in a better mood.
  8. Everything feels less intense, and the semester seems to go by faster than usual (probably due to Thanksgiving break, which kind of feels like an introduction to the end of the semester!).

I’m sure I could think of more, but in short, those are my very favorite things about teaching in the Fall!

Happy teaching!
